Hi,

I'm running Lubuntu 12.04 and got this issue: since it's not that easy to find a decent and lightweight GTK3 theme (I prefer the Mist engine), I can either use heavier but more polished ones or older, but smoother GTK2 themes. Thing is, some of my applications (e.g. network manager) won't use those GTK2 themes. Why is that? Can I force them to do so somehow? I'd be thankful for some enlightenment and/or interesting reading here.

This will do what you want I think. Works great on my system in combination with the Gnome tweak tool;

you can get it here;

You can even force recalcitrant stuff like Firefox and Thunderbird to behave;

I adjusted Firefox and Thunderbird to suit my preferences, along with a lot of other stuff. Played around for a couple of hours to get it all set up but it was quite easy to do.

I wanted fairly dark ( but functional!) themes. Most of those available are either very poor or barely functional. ( Black on black text etc).

This worked very nicely. This is what Firefox looks like now;

and I have all my other software set up with the themes I like. By far the easiest tool I have ever used for such a job.

Some examples;

I thought some of the brighter colours might be a nuisance, but they are proving extremely useful;

That's some interesting stuff you got me here, I'll definitely give it a go. Guess there's not much to explain so, I really appreciate your trouble of making examples and overall thorough help. Cheers.

My pleasure. The best way to learn about it is to play with it. Complex instructions are generally just a pain. It is a great piece of software, one of the best I have ever used.
