Unity 2D launcher covers desktop icons in 12.04

Just upgraded to 12.04, now the Unity 2D launcher covers any icons on the left of the desktop. The attached screenshot shows what happens after the icons are auto arranged. How do I fix this annoyance? Is there any way to add an exclusion area so the desktop icons don't go that far left?

The 3D unity behaves as it should in this regard (no overlap), but its just way to heavy for my laptop to handle.
