Hi,
I'm trying to fix a PC for a friend. It has gnu grub v 1.99-12ubuntu5
I think the PC has a hardware problem, because it locks up at various points in the boot up. But I have tested the ram and hard drive. I'm not sure how to test the MB.
I thought I would try a reinstall of Ubuntu, though, just to see if I get lucky and that fixes the problem. If I do a new install, or an upgrade, will it leave the existing data (documents, pictures, etc) alone? I assume there may be an option to reformat the drive during install, which I would of course not do. Any basic troubleshooting ideas? I don't get any error messages, it just locks up. I've tried the "Previous Linux versions" and they all lock up too. Anything I can run from a command prompt?
Thanks

lock up? you mean freeze or lokc as in it gets it's self encrypted or something?

if it freezes, open the box and check capacitors on motherboard if any of them are leaking or bulged. also check capacitors on the graphics card.
