Hi,
I'm trying to fix a PC for a friend. It has gnu grub v 1.99-12ubuntu5
I think the PC has a hardware problem, because it locks up at various points in the boot up. But I have tested the ram and hard drive. I'm not sure how to test the MB.
I thought I would try a reinstall of Ubuntu, though, just to see if I get lucky and that fixes the problem. If I do a new install, or an upgrade, will it leave the existing data (documents, pictures, etc) alone? I assume there may be an option to reformat the drive during install, which I would of course not do. Any basic troubleshooting ideas? I don't get any error messages, it just locks up. I've tried the "Previous Linux versions" and they all lock up too. Anything I can run from a command prompt?
Thanks
