Hello guys,

I am newbie in Linux world. This is just my first step.

I have tried to replace my win7 with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.
I used USB drive as installation source, because CD did not work.

First time I have installed Ubuntu, probably, I placed GRUB (Am I right) in wrong device - USB drive. As a result it was an error. I was trying to solve it, but I couldn't. So I decided to reinstall it, but it still does not work.

I have used "Boot Info Script"
http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/
to analyze my installation. Could you help me with this problem.

Looks like, this time I have tried to use my C: drive (win7) for boot source

Pasatige,

Welcome to the Ubuntu forums! :-)

It could be that you are still booting the removable drive first. Try changing the BIOS to boot your hard drive first (or remove the other drive). But even then, it looks like you are still using Grub Legacy.

I couldn't tell if the LiveCD didn't work at all or you just couldn't install from it. If possible, I recommend you boot a LiveCD and "Try It" and install/run the Boot Repair app. It's a great GUI app that can solve a lot of boot issues. You can run it from the LiveCD. See the link for Boot Repair in my signature line.

As to what is going on, you have a very old version of Grub (or booting from the wrong drive, as mentioned above). If asked, allow Boot Repair to install GRUB 2. Also, you want to install it on the drive (sda) and NOT on the Ubuntu partition itself (sda6).

If Boot Repair doesn't work out, come back and we can help you from a terminal in the LiveCD.

You have also installed grub2 into the Windows PBR - partition boot record. Windows required its boot code in the NTFS partition. But NTFS keeps a backup and you can use testdisk to restore the backup, if you have only overwritten once.

This has instructions on using testdisk to repair the install of grub to the boot sector for windows from Ubuntu or Linux LiveCD.
