I'd love to use Lubuntu in school, running from a student USB stick to teach programming in a safe environment (e.g. they can trash their USB stick with no worries) ... however ... it's currently too dangerous running on school PCs in case students accidentally overwrite standard images.

Is there a live image that will run from a USB stick that EXCLUDES the ability to install on a hard drive, or an easy way to disable the abilty both at astarup and on the desktop?

Thanks in advance ...

You might be able to make a custom image with Remastersys (http://www.geekconnection.org/remastersys/ubuntu.html). Note how the about page warns:

If you do not have internet access when you start remastersys, it will fail to download the frontend for the installer and your live system will not be installable.

So, simply don't permit Remastersys to access the repos, and you'll get the iso you want.

Thanks for the tip - I have managed to get something like I need ... now to try it out in class!
