There doesn't seem to be any way to add a screensaver in the oddly reduced system settings GUI in Gnome Classic. Is there a way to do this via terminal? I'd really like to have some screensavers and not just the blank. :)

Hi ibozzie.

It was a design decision (actually inherit from Gnome 3).

You can easily install them. Take a look at this tutorial (http://www.liberiangeek.net/2011/10/enable-screensavers-in-ubuntu-11-10-oneiric-ocelot/). Although it is for 11.10, it should work on 12.04.

I hope it helps.
Regards.

Unless your running a tube monitor you really don't need one . See the link if you want one . http://www.howtogeek.com/114027/how-to-add-screensavers-to-ubuntu-12.04/

Thanks very much, guys! Couldn't be easier. Yup, I know I don't technically need it, but I enjoy it.

Just updating this [SOLVED] thread to register my thanks for the question and excellent linked answer.

And I want to put out there to the community that using a screensaver to display your years of photos that you would likely never bother looking through again has been an unexpected treat since discovering that functionality in xscreensaver a while back. I'm glad there is a way to maintain that functionality in my Ubuntu 12.04 updated desktop.
