Hello everyone,

I'm new to Linux, and I've been following a few tutorials to find my way around the new Precise Pangolin, copying commands that people have been nice enough to give me, and such like.

I've tried to install GNOME Classic because Unity is a tad slow on my computer (Fujitsu Amilo La 1703), and the first time it worked very well. However, I've had to format since (because of some undue parameter change of mine).

Now I've reinstalled GNOME, when I log using it, all the icons on the right of the top-panel have disappeared, and all I have are the "Applications" and the "Places" menus. Plus, when I try to uninstall GNOME, it still appears in the Unity login screen.

I don't quite get it. Do some of you do?

Any help appreciated, thanks in advance,
Clem.

If missing panel items in classic gnome use Alt + Right click or Ctrl + Alt + right click and select add to panel . Add the items you want from the menu.

Thank you sir!

I've tried alt + right click, but it seems I can't add the items that I have on the top right corner in Unity, which I had on my first setup of GNOME.

I'm starting to think my first setup was something hybrid and serendipitous that I will never be able to achieve again :)

Since it's a Wubi install things might be a little different, I'm not sure because I haven't tried it, but I suspect a configuration problem.

First of all did you actually remove the original Wubi install by going to add/remove software in Windows? And then did you totally reinstall?

I wrote this:

And I'm working on a post to add to that for restoring a default configuration, but I have not tested it at all in a Wubi install :(

So, just thinking out loud here, I'd first want to know that you're running a clean Wubi install.

I've used Wubi so very little that I'm kind of clueless

I do have an old Win XP puter I could do some testing on though .......... but it'll take a while as I'm busy, away from the desk busy :)

In fact it's a ubuntu install, not a wubi install, my mistake :)

The list of thread types was too long, I was frightened and clicked frantically until I apparently ended up on wubi. Sorry!

Then look at step #2 here:

And also look here:

I know I need to improve that thread, I just need time.

You may want to install XFCE as its a bit more flexible then gnome classic.

Problem solved. Sir, you made my day!

I am amazed at the speed at which you guys answer questions on this forum. I am beginning to understand how this whole "free" thing works.
