I have just started using Ubuntu (12.04). I get the "Failed to download repository information" error when I check for updates. How can I solve this?

Either you're experiencing network issues or canonical is having server problems.
You could try this:
Go to system setting->software sources and click on the repository server box, the default is "main server", select the second option it gives.
The main server is slow for me, i use the en_US (e.g untranslated) ubuntu and it has has an entry for the us mirror in the list, it's a lot faster on the us server then on main.

........

Those URLs do not have the correct strings. Did you install/modify your system with any unofficial tools?

They do.
us.archive.ubuntu.com is the us mirror
nl.archive.ubuntu.com is the one in the netherlands
archive.ubuntu.com is the main mirror
So: Yes, they are correct.

I don't have any network issues as I am able to browse the internet without any problem. Where is that repository box that you want me to check? In system settings I have the following icons.
Backup, Details, Management service, Time and Date, Universal access and User accounts.
There is nothing by the name 'software sources'.

I think it's in management service.
It should also be in the same menu as the shutdown button.

When I click on Management service, it asks me to install landscape client. Then i get the following error.
"Package doesnt exist. Check the spelling of the package name, and that the appropriate repository is enabled"

Yes!! I got that. I tried using a different server. I also tried using the " Select the best server to download from" option. In both cases it says' " Unable to download. Check network connection". Since internet is accessible from my browser, it is not network problem, right? Do i need to enter my proxy settings somewhere?

Try setting it in this (link) way (http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-change-system-proxy-settings-from-terminal-in-ubuntu-12-04precise.html) as well.

Did that. After I type the final line (proxy mode 'manual'), i get, " The provided value is outside of the valid range".

This is specific to apt so maybe this works?

I have the settings in the environment and apt file just as mentioned in that link except for the username and password. (So, instead of http_proxy="user: pass@my.proxy: port, my file reads http_proxy="my.proxy: port). Is it necessary to input the proxy authentication in there? I tried to edit those files and got the following message, "You do not have the permissions necessary to save the file. Please check that you typed the location correctly and try again." I dont know why I am being denied the permission when I have logged in as the administrator.

Run:

gksudo gedit

This'll allow gedit to write to system files like apt.conf.

You need to spec the login and proxy in the apt.conf file like the link said.

Okay.

Here's a tip about sudo:
It doesn't copy env vars, so if i set ABC=hello in my shell and sudo to root, the var is gone till i return to my normal shell.

Here's an example:

export ABC=hello
echo $ABC

Now run sudo -i and try to run the echo command again (you can't do sudo echo $ABC because the shell you use to call sudo will replace it with hello before it calls sudo, so you can't see the effect if you do that).
It'll turn up empty.
Same thing for apt.

One more thing, I need to bypass the proxy for local addresses. I have done that in my browser but still unable to open local webpages. How do I go about it?
