hardware is http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12614_div/12614_div.HTML with brand new 360gb hdd & 2gb ram.

Can't seem to install. Tried standard install CD and installation hung with progress bar at 100%. Tried again with text installer and install completed, but after installation got a few errors on reboot which went by too quickly for me to see then the grub> prompt.

Tried installing 11.04 progress hung at about 85%. SO . . . decided to try text install one more time. It Worked! Logged in, did a boatload of updates, reboot then . . . GRUB>

Each install attempt was on a clean partition. Tried a Windows install to confirm hardware was behaving and had no problems.

Suggestions??

Lets try the bootscript to take a closer look at the set-up.

Using the live Ubuntu cd/usb thumb down load the link and extract it to the desktop, then run the command. You will then see a results.txt appear, open it and right click copy all the text, then open a reply, click the # in the reply panel generating code tags, and paste all the text in between.

sudo bash ~/Desktop/bootinfoscript

So the script looks like it should boot in. If you hold down the shift immediately on powering on the grub menu should show.

So can you tell us what exactly happens when you try and boot in, try this with the shift key as well to see if the grub menu shows. Ubuntu with only one OS skips the grub menu.

I wonder if you are just getting a black screen and need a graphic driver. The boot from the actual grub menu if it shows will give us more clues. If you hit the up arrow key at some point after trying grub or at any time, even without seeing the grub menu, you might see text if it stops at a point note that and post it as well.

I think this tool probably will reload the mbr and get you in.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair

There is also this one as well supergrub.
http://www.supergrubdisk.org/super-grub2-disk/

The second tool will just get you in if you use this one run this once in.

sudo install-grub /dev/sda

Then

sudo update-grub

I could give you the commands to run from a live cd as well.
