I have HP Pavilion desktop that was running XP on it. I crated an Ubuntu thumb drive and it ran just fine off the drive so I installed it on to the hard drive, erasing XP. it said it was done and to restart and when I do it goes past the bois screen and then say "out of range" and thats it. When I reboot of the thumb drive it works fine. I have re-installed 5 times all different ways (upgrade, erase, and side by side) but still nothing. Please help I am new to Linux and besides this glitch so far I love Ubuntu

If you are having problems with an Ubuntu 11.10 install, I would suggest trying Ubuntu 12.04. You can download it here:

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

If you still have problems, it is most likely related to your display/graphics card. Here is a webpage that explains how you can fix it:

http://mathewf4rr3l.hubpages.com/hub/How-to-cure-Out-Of-Range-Errors-During-Ubuntu-Installation

Basically, from my understanding, your computer is trying to select a display resolution higher than your monitor supports. Hope it helps!

I tried to download 12 but not sure how since I'm running 11 off a thumb drive. I tried to update to 12 and it said not enough room

Did you try the display fix that I suggested after you installed Ubuntu 11.10 (you will be able to update it later)?

I just tried it a few times and nothing happen. IT said to press this combo (Ctrl+Alt+Numpad+) I haven't had my coffee yet so I'm thinking numpad+ is the plus key on the 10key area. Am I completely wrong? I couldn't find a numpad

Here is a more recent instructions on how to fix it:

http://sslinux.blogspot.com/2011/10/how-to-fix-ubuntu-1110-out-of-range.html

Basically, give it some time (around 10 seconds) and see if it will change. Then follow the instructions.

This will probably will since the instructions are for the same version you installed.

You will have to install Start Up Manager then. Here are instructions on how to install it and use it:
