I finally have all the hardware I needed and I've got a 12.04 alternate installation disk ready. I've got two identical drives and I'm trying to recreate something like my previous partitioning scheme: separate partitions for /, /usr, /var, /tmp, swap and /home. In the partitioning screen I set this up under one drive and went to "configure software RAID" where it tells me to choose two active devices. I see the partitions for one drive, in my case SCSI3 or sdc* while the second drive doesn't appear at all. under the partitioning screen it appeared as SCSI4 or sdd*. How do I set the active devices for a RAID1 setup between these two drive with my partitioning scheme?

Work and distractions have prevented me from trying again. but I'm bumping because my original question is still unresolved. what do I select as my active device in a RAID1 when I spread different directories across multiple partitions; read my first post for full detials.
