I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a HP Pavilion dm6.

I succeeded in installing two keyboard lay outs. But I can't properly select the arabic one. It shows in the 'system tray', but on the menu it isn't selected (see image), and although the arabic keyboard is shown in the system tray it types 'latin'.

السلام عليكم :)
you shall click the "Arabisch" layout in the menu then you can write in arabic, or you need to enable switching layouts from the system settings<keyboard layout<layout tab< then choose options<< in "keys to change layout" choose Alt + ****, now you can write in both arabic and your other language using Alt + ****
تحياتي :)

Problems aren't solved, and aren't confined to Arabic. I tried also the English (US) lay out, that failed too.

So, in the task manager I see the different keyboards. I can select a keyboard, and the two letter code appears in the task manager. But it isn't applied in any of the windows.

Any further suggestions?

Thanks anyway.

Got the same problem too, can't write in arabic ever !
PS: when switching to the arabic layout, yes i see the "ar" text but i noticed that the above layout (french in my case) is still selected, eventhought it shows the "ar" layout text in the notification bar !
