When I start up my Lenovo X200s, it comes up with this menu as usual, though I am not sure apart from using the selection at the top to get the highest numbered version (or Windows at the bottom) what it should be used for:

When I start up the PC with the top 4 options it stops with a line mode prompt with one of the following showing on the screen:

Any suggestions welcomed

Welcome to the forums.

All of the screens you posted are in log files, which you can access from the liveCD if necessary.

It does not look like it upgraded or just partially upgraded. Have you tried recovery mode?

Was your issue similar to this?

when you get to the point where it says "Preparing libc6" (after only about a minute or 2 into the installation), look in the bottom of the update window and there you will see it says terminal with an arrow next to it....click the arrow to reveal the terminal window below, and you will see that the update/install is actually prompting you to give it the "ok" to configure libc6, you need to reply by saying "ok"....you do that by pressing the "tab" key. that should highlight the word "ok" in the terminal, then press "enter" on your keyboard to complete and continue.
