Hangs with the error message "change the resolution"

I have an old Acer running Win XP. The resolution on the XP is 1024 X 1060 or something like that. I used the wubi installer to install on a 10 gig partition the latest Ubuntu 12.04?

The dual boot works but when I boot to Ubuntu, I get an error message that says I need to change the resolution on the monitor. Then, I'm stuck. No command prompt just an icon that floats around on my screen saying I need to change the resolution. Any ideas on this?

press ctll+alt+f1 and follow this guide

then try again .

Thanks for the info. I did get to the command prompt but when I run xrandr I get an error message: Can't open display

Now what might I do.

I REALLY appreciate your help. I'm not giving up until I get this running.

What kind of VGA drivers you got in your PC ?
Try to boot to Recovery mode and then select FailsafeX mode . then from there re-install VGA drivers and try again .

I did that and got to a menu that said:

Run in low graphics
Reconfigure graphics
troubleshoot error
exit to console login


down below, it says Cancel or Ok

the keyboard, in this menu will not work. Everything is frozen.?????
