I'm split between choices over the cpu to have when buying a notebook.
I am seeking a sub $650 notebook. And I want to do programming (in C and Python), test compression algorithms, and do a little video transcoding.
Is i5 2430M 2.4 GHz turbo 3GHz better than i3 2350M 2.3 GHz with no turbo boost?

The notebooks are.

Or is this better

Or should I get an AMD APU.
Any other suggestions.

I'd go for i5. it supports AES-NI instruction set, so you can use proper encription with (almost) no performance losses.

The i5 is definitely better than the i3. But depending on the price difference, it may not be enough better to be worth it. The only difference between the two is the slight, unnoticeable difference in speed, and turbo boost. Everything else is going to be exactly the same. The links don't work for me, so I can't see the prices. If the prices are close, then go for the i5. If there is a big difference in price, then you'll have to decide whether turbo boost is worth the extra. My personal decision was that turbo boost, alone, wasn't worth a huge price difference, so I went with the i3, which is still a great proc for the price.

I wouldn't go with AMD for a laptop.
