I tried to install Ubuntu desktop (several versions: 12.04, 11.10, 10.04) on a laptop (asus X70S) from a live USB (this USB installs correctly on another PC).
After booting on the live USB and selection of the menu item dedicated to try without installation, the linux kernel is uncompressed then Linux starts... but after many text messages are displayed on the screen (this takes less than 2 seconds), the computer is powered off suddenly.
Then the power button remains inactive untill the power cord is unpluged and the battery removed.
I suspect some power management issue.
I'm wondering if some available boot options would be suitable (acpi=off). If so, have such option have to be added in the file /boot/grub/menu.lst after the installation has completed? Or will changes been made automatically by Linux to adapt it to the hardware?
