Project Mother is a nice thread.

http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=13414&highlight=mother+project

I'm going to build 2 pc's .. one for my father and one for a friend of his.

They both have very little computing experience. And I know they only want things like :

-downloading movies,watching movies
-downloading music,listening to music
-burning cd's
-typing an occasional text
-surfing the web
-mailing
-chatting

They don't want to play fancy new games. And they don't want to put a lot of effort and time into protecting their pc's from virusses and other malware. So I think Ubuntu's right for them. I'm going to install Ubuntu and explain it to them.

Their english isn't really good so I'm going to install Ubuntu with dutch as the language setting.

Do you know of any dutch websites that explain the basics of Gnome,Ubuntu/Debian,Linux targeted to beginners? I will explain a lot to them and help them. But I'm sure they want to explore and read for themselves. This also saves me a lot of time.

Are there any dutch linux newby forums that you would recommend ?

Tips and recommendations are welcome. I will keep you up to date.

It's about two exactly the same pc's with exactly the same configuration and exactly the same programs installed. I'm assembling these pc's at my dad's where I don't have acces to other pc's. What would you advise ?

I'm probably putting this videocard in :

Nvidia GeForce PCX 5300 128 Mb PCI Express

I want to know your experiences with this videocard. Does it work correctly in hoary ?

see :
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=19869

I need a good reliable socket 775 motherboard for two Ubuntu desktop-machines I'm gonna build. I want :

-has to support ubuntu
-has to be reliable (it's for desktop-pc's but I want them to be still functioning in 5 years)
-Asus or chaintech
- max 200 euro's (aprox)

What would you recommend ?

see :
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=19682

The rest of the hardware is already decided :

ANTEC SONATA Piano Black Quiet Super Mini Tower(EC)
zalman CNPS7700-AlCu

I'm thinking of getting this motherboard :

Asus K8S-MX

Let's see if an sempron 3100+ outperforms an P4 520 2.8 GHZ. If it does it's cool because it also saves 50 euro's.

Both processors will do what you need....Since you are not getting this for a FPS junkie, than even a 10% drop in performance (it won't be that much if anything) wouldn't matter.

Ubuntu even works nicely on my p3-700 (overclocked to 826 mhz) with 512 mb ram. It is my internet gateway, fileserver and also runs amule.

I think I'm buying the Athlon 64 2800+ since it has more cache and higher system bus speed. It's only 8 euro's more.

Ah...the Pentium 3 (or as I call it "the last Intel chip worth buying"). Lots of RAM + P3 is a good ride. Yours would mop the floor with a 1.6 p4.

Hmmm....sounds good, just be sure to run it in x86 mode.

I don't know about that but it is fast enough for fileserver/gateway/amule/vnc :)

same here :) and youre right about the P3 being a good chip, i personally own 3 P3 computers, 500, 600, and 933 mhz, and when couple with decent RAM, they run just as good as my old 1.6 Ghz P4 with windows on it.

i find linux runs better on any computer than windows does, not as much junk running in the background

Its been known for a while. Look at some old Tom's Hardware benchmarks. The 1.2ghz Pentium 3 chips ususally are neck and neck with a pentium 4 1.6GHZ in many tasks.

both the imac's of my father and the one of his friend are up and running and have internet acces :)

It's really easy to work with them. There is still some work needed after installation for example :

install xinema http://www.lightheadsw.com/xinema.php to be able to play fullscreen movies
xvid en divx delegate components (for quicktime)
msn messenger
azureus
turn firewall on and remote acces for me so I can help them

currently there are no problems. The imacs look really really cool.

Hey.. I'm the "Project: MOTHER" guy..

hey man :)

Any chance on an update from this project please?

sure

Currently my father is very happy with his imac G5.

He uses itunes to buy music and to listen to it. He's bought an optical wire to connect it to the stereo system. The sound quality is very good!

The next time I see him I'm gonna put a live cd of breezy in it and see how he reacts.

When Apple decides he has to pay for the next upgrade then I'll put a live cd in again. If everything works nicely and he isn't too scared then we are probably going to dual boot with Ubuntu.

But I think he prefers the bling-bling of OS X. I think he's not going to switch to Ubuntu until Ubuntu has that kind of bling bling too.

I could have started a 'project father & mother' thread as well, but there is (fortunatly) not much to say :p
I'd say the whole process took 2 hours top, but the planning phase was much longer than for the 'project mother' thread (actually I was thinking about it since I'm using ubuntu myself, when hoary came out).
The key point to convince my father to switch was security. I told him that, with linux, browsing online was much safer and that email-spreading viruses wouldn't be an issue anymore either. He makes very basic use of the computer, mostly to browse online, check emails, home banking and some office things like writing letters or managing some spreadsheets.
My only concern was home banking. The bank does indeed provide a linux version of the security program, but it's outdated and not as convenient as the full (windows-only) GUI. As it is one of the main apps he uses, it could have proven to be a major turn-off. Eventually I sorted that out by running the windows version with wine.
The transition itself was very smooth.
There were no hardware issues, everything was automatic.
On windows, I already installed firefox, thunderbird and openoffice ages ago and my father is used to them, so importing the settings of these programs in ubuntu was easy.
I had a pretty much complete list of all HOW-TO's for things I had to tweak, such as installing mplayer-plugin and codecs, a shutdown icon on the desktop, getting the mouse wheel to work, etc.
I also removed the necessity to type a password for update-manager and turned on auto-login for my father's account.
That was one month ago and since then he didn't have any problems with ubuntu.

How did you remove the password requirement for update-manager ? Depending on how you did it it may introduce a security risk.

November 20th, 2005, 06:41 PM
I don't remember the exact details, but it was in sudo visudo.
something like
%user-name ALL=NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/update-manager

the gksudo window still pops up though, but it doesn't complain if the user doesn't type the password.

I'm no visudo /etc/sudoers expert but if you do it like every user can start update-manager and mess up the sources.list then this is a security risk.

It only bypasses the permission for the people in the group "user-name" in the example I have given, it could have been %admin but I chose only to put my father's name.
I'm open to suggestions if there is a better way to do it!

you can at least specify the username of your father instead of using %users

But I wouldn't "remove the password" because it makes people think like "okay now I have to be careful" which is a good thing.
