If I just wait patiently and keep applying updates to Kubuntu 12.04, do I eventually get KDE 4.8.3 without having to change my software sources (http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-sc-4.8.3)?

Yes, once the update has been made available in the main repositories. Eventually you will get 4.8.4 too.

Thank you Paul. I now have KDE 4.8.3 on Kubuntu 12.04 without making any changes.
