Hi, please someone help me....

(Sorry for my english)

Hi, I have a Pc with 2 Hd (1Tb each) on Raid0. I had a Windows 7 64bits working for several months.
When I installed the Windows I let a 100Gb partition empty to install Ubuntu someday.
I was using Linux on a Virtualbox, but this week I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 in this 100Gb partition.

I used the Ubuntu alternate cd, because the 'normal' cd was giving me trouble with the Raid0. The grub installation always reported a error. After a lot of work I found that I nedded to install grub on partition /dev/mapper/isw_chjbfeec_DougRaid1 (see Bootinfo below).

The Windows installation created a 100Mb boot partition, so I needed to install grub in this partition.

Now I have the Ubuntu working 100% ok.

The problem is, the Windows is not booting! The windows option is present on the grub menu, but when I choose the windows option there is a black screen and after that the grub is reloaded.

My Bootinfo is:

Boot Info Script 0.61 [1 April 2012]

How we can see the Windows part at grub is:

menuentry "Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/mapper/isw_chjbfeec_DougRaid1)" --class windows --class os {
insmod part_msdos
insmod ntfs
set root='(sda,msdos1)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root C89C73D19C73B910
chainloader +1
}

I tried a lot of combinations at the line:

set root='(sda,msdos1)'

, but no success

I tried to change uuid to the /dev/mapper/isw_chjbfeec_DougRaid2 uuid, but the grub reports a error.

I dont know what to do now.

I really need to boot my windows partition.

Someone knows what to do?

Thanks........

Hi,

I fixed the windows boot, but now I cannot boot Linux :confused:

I openned the Windows 7 dvd and I tried a 'bootrec /fixboot'

Now grub starts and I can load the Windows 7, but I cannot boot the Linux this time.

The log reports that the uuid bbab868a-ea53-4be3-ba7d-2737fe6cb24c is invalid.

I didn't run the 'bootrec /fixmbr', so the grub is still installed, but this /fixboot must be corrupted the linux boot.

What now? Any ideas?

Thanks

:confused::confused::confused:

Well, I tried do use the boot-repair tool, running from the live cd, but the boot-repair removed the windows option from grub, and I still cannot boot the Ubuntu.

I had to use the Windows Dvd to do a "bootrec /fixboot" and "bootrec /fixmbr" to use the Windows, but now the grub is gone!

Now I came back to the beggining of time ](*,)

I'll try to install grub all over again today.

You started wrong from the start. You never install bootloaders on partitions, except in special cases.

You should have installed it on your array, not on the partition. And definitely not on the windows partition because it needs to keep it's windows boot sector. If you ever install grub on a partition, do it on the ubuntu partition, not windows.

Just load live mode, activate the array, and install grub2 to the main array, not a partition. It should work.

Hi darkod!
i am new in this are but I need to have both windows and ubuntu on my device. Could you please explain me step by step how to install ubuntu on raid 0 in order to be possible to switch with no problems between the operating systems. thanks a lot!!!

I don't use fakeraid and I don't have a step by step. The most important is to use the alternate install cd, it's easier than using the standard live cd.

Once you start the installation it will ask you if you want to activate the raid, say Yes. Then you should see the raid device in the list of disks/partitions, and install on it any way you want, either with two partitions (root + swap), or you might want to have a separate /home partition too.

Also you should know that raid0 is not really safe for your data because if one of the disks fails, you lose all data.
