Yup, i have switched back towards the end of the Linux world that I came from, to a distro based on Slackware, but a lot more up to date. Sort of what Ubuntu is to debian.
It's called Zenwalk Linux, and it boots so fast it's unreal.
It uses a package manager and software repository, though it is absolutely tiny, with only kde as extras really. This is partly because the community is absolutely tiny, but also because compiling something for this is fast and easy.
Zenwalk uses XFCE for it's default interface, and is on kernel 2.6.16.
It is not, however, a newbie distro, as you often find yourself at the CLI, and a lot of programs would have to be compiled & installed from source code.
I now have it just as I like it, and am very happy with it.
