Lets do it again

Hello. I was wondering when I look in the update manager some of the packages say (New Install) underneath them, and many do not. What does this mean exactly? Also, I am trying uncheck certain updates but when I click the install button it rechecks everything I unchecked and then starts to update, which I find very frustrating and want it to stop. The reason I am asking is because the last time the update manager had as many updates for me as it does now when I restarted my computer it wouldn't allow me to log in to ubuntu. Thanks

-some new packages are often added to archives
- some of them are splitted and/or modified

using synaptic is easier for updating/upgrading (and less buggy)
