hello ubuntu forums!

-xubuntu 12.04

When I try to sign in to my account, I can type in my password and press enter, but it hangs on the blue background image and doesn't go past that. Strangely enough, if I sign in to a guest account first, then sign out of that and into my main, it works flawlessly. What's most peculiar is that this only started recently, and before this, I haven't had any issue with logging in. I can't think of any other details that may be helpful though. It's a HP Pavilion dv6 laptop

(new to linux)

Any help or recommendations would be extremely appreciated! Thank you everyone! :]

I checked the permissions for the files

It says read and write for the top option, but should I adjust it for the others? Or should I delete .Xauthority? (like the OP in the thread you linked did?)

Make a backup of the file somewhere and then delete it.

What I recommend is backup everything in the account. Create a new account and restore everything. If this still happens get your Xubuntu CD/DVD out and choose the restore option when installing the os again. This same thing happened on my NAS with Xubuntu 12.04 LTS on it.

I tried that, but unfortunately to no avail.
Here's a log of what I attempted last night, with advice from 4chan's technology board

This would be an extreme last resort for me. As long as the guest method still works, I can still sign into my normal account (though by more irritating means)

What happens if you create a new account (ie park7) and try logging in with that?
