Hello, I downloaded on the 26th the new LTS 12.04. I really like it and have found the dual monitors setup works perfectly. I am having some issues though.

1) Everytime I try to open Libre office, it freezes instantly. You don't even see any of the bar go across. I left it for 20 minutes the first time it happened, as I thought maybe first time setup issue. But no, everytime I start up Libre it freezes.

I also tried to start gimp just now, and it froze up. I have been having a lot of freezing issues since the new install. I did not upgrade, I installed fresh full LTS 12.04 64 bit. I have run apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, etc, and still have this issue. I am sure it is something little, just not familiar enough with Ubuntu to know what is wrong.

Any help is greatly appreciated, as I just started my practicum today to finish off University.

I find it is locking/ freezing when ever I open a new program.

I have 12 gigs of ram, so ram is not an issue. It happens when I have nothing running, or a pile of things running.

The mouse still moves, but I can't click on anything, and can't close anything.

It appears like it is related to compiz, because when I freeze, I enter Ctrl-Alt-F3, type top and I get compiz at the top of the list, If I kill the PID that is compiz, I can navigate again, but the display is messed up.

Programs that cause freezing when opened...

Libre Office
Gimp
Vuze
Gwenview

Programs not having issues:
Chromium
Chrome
Thunderbird
Firefox
Gedit
Geany

The programs causing the freezing freeze up everytime they are opened.

Please help...I am not sure how to proceed from here.

Is there anything interesting at the end of /home/username/.xsession-errors and/or /var/log/syslog after the desktop environment locks up but before you kill compiz?

Do you see any interesting messages if you start gimp or lowriter from gnome-terminal?

I have had freezing but only while multitasking. Its not even the CPU, it does the same as you. Mouse moves but nothing can be selected.

I think its compiz. see if it happens in ubuntu 2d

no, no messages. I click on say gimp, and it looks like it is going to open, then the pc just hangs. No messages, nothing.

My pc is fairly new. I have an Asus mother board, quad core AMD processor(Phenom11) and 12 gbs ram. The system should be able to handle it.

I am having the same issues whether I have a lot of windows open, or nothing at all.

Isn't there some commands I can run in terminal to check for errors?

Libre office starts to open. The Libre Office splash screen comes up, but the tiny red bar in the middle of that screen gets to about 2 mm thick when it freezes.

I have tried to remove libre and reinstall, and have the same issues.

I have tried ubuntu, ubuntu 2d, gnome, cairo bar with unity and effects, cairo bar with no effects.

There seems to be a conflict somewhere, that is causing the lock up.

do you run any other operating system? Does it happen in them?

my box is a dual boot, and I have win 7 on it. Win 7 is freeze free, and has no issues, other than being windows.

I have 12.04, which is having issues.

I am trying to think...

way back in 11.04 I had freezing issues and disabling the global menu bar cleared them up.

All I can say is, leave htop running and see if you can catch the culprit. Try updating video drivers.

Not sure if it's the cause but I found a load of segmentation faults in my syslog and it looks like file system is being mounted as read-only:

output of:
$ cat /var/log/syslog | grep error

So after days of trying to locate the problem with the freezing, I said the hell with it, and wiped out the OS. I reinstalled from a fresh download, and all is great. No freezing.

Could the original download of the ISO have gotten corrupted? I downloaded and installed first thing in the morning on the 26th of April, possible corruption due to heavy downloads?

I don't know what the issue was, but it is fixed now with a fresh install.

Compiz still seems to be temperamental.
