black screen when booting

Hi all, I was dual booting 11.10 along side win 7 with no problem. So I decided to do a fresh install of 12.04. Now when I try to boot computer I get a black screen. Only way i can get the computer to work is to shut power off and on a couple of times. Any help would be greatly apreciated. Thanks

After a cold boot, does it then boot normally?

Is it shutting down correctly or are you forcing it with a power shut down?

If you have to shutdown, try this:
Holding down Alt and SysRq (which is the Print Screen key) while slowly typing REISUB
R-E-I-S-U-B to force shutdown
A good way to remember it is.

Thanks for the replies, I didnt know what to do so I just reinstalled. This time I didnt check box to update while installing. I dont know why but i had this problem before & forgot. Anyway its working now. Have a good one. Regards
