I installed the propriety driver from AMD.com for my ATI HD Radeon 3450. However, after the installation, the flash drive-based 12.04 OS will not boot to X. I pressed Ctrl-Alt-F1, I saw only stopped boot messages and I can't get to a prompt. I can see the flash drive is working. Therefore, I pressed Ctrl-Alt-F7 and Voila! I am on the Desktop. However, I cannot get to a terminal using Ctrl-Alt-F1, Ctrl-Alt-F2, and etc. The only way is to get it from the DASH. The bad part is I have to use the Ctrl-Alt-F7 everytime I boot to Ubuntu 12.04. Therefore, I have removed the driver and installed the open source version.
