View Full Version : Any use for a CD-server?

OK, I MIGHT be able to "obtain" a free CD-server. It's basically a small tower-case holding 7 SCSI CD-ROM-drives. There are RCA-outputs from each drive (or so it seems), and there's a ehternet-jack in the back of the box, so you can hook it to the network.

Now, does anyone have any suggestions what I could do with that thing? The drives can only read discs, not write. And they are not DVD-drives, just plain 'ol CD-ROM.

Maybe if I could replace the CD's with HD's, I could then turn it in to a NAS-box :).

It's not a computer as such, even though the case does resemble a smallish tower-pc a bit. It has one of these (http://www.axis.com/techsup/cdsrv/storpoint_cdp/index.htm) (I think, the appearance is similar) in a topmiost drive-bay and bunch of CD-ROM drives beneath it.

More info here (http://www2.axis.com/files/datasheet/cdp/cdpds.pdf)

You said it has an ethernet port in the back , Do you think it has at least one ( 1 ) PCI Slot in it..??
For this thing.=> www.routerboard.com/rb44.html

Maybe turn it into a Router/Firewall.? http://www.ipcop.org/index.php

Basically, yes. But it has 7 drives.

IIRC it does not have any PCI-slots. So I can't really expand it that much. Apparently I can expand the RAM, but that's about it. I could also install HD's there (maybe).

Primarily it would be serving CD-ROM's to the network-users. I would like to know how could I use something like that in an useful fashion.

Nope. It has a power-socket and ethernet-socket. It has a "CPU", but I don't think that you can use it as a real computer ;).

Basically it has the ability to share CD's across the network. And I'm looking for useful applications for that feature.

The usage speaks for itself: you can create a multimedia server, or
at least an audio server. I know some DJs could appreciate it- for some
of them, MP3 just doesnt cut it. Or for a family that can't agree on music...

Well Sushi.? Did you come up with any good ideas for that thing..??
