View Full Version : [SOLVED] 12.04 Install Issue

optimsprm
April 30th, 2012, 07:16 PM
After upgrading my system from 11.10 to 12.04 I did the requisite restart and loaded up my system again. When it came to the screen where-in I choose which version of Ubuntu I will employ (i.e. "Ubuntu, with linux 3.2.0-24-generic" among others) and I choose any of them I get the following dialog:

"error: no such partition."

While I have been using Ubuntu for quite a while, I'm still fairly novice when it comes to the nuts and bolts of the system.
I have already tried to do a re-install via an .iso disc but it did not change the problem. My goal here is to be able to keep all the data on my Hard Drive and have an operating OS. Any help would be most appreciative.

Do not reinstall, that usually creates one more install. And it can lose data sometimes, depending how it's done.

Boot into live mode with the cd (Try Ubuntu), and in terminal post the output of:
sudo fdisk -l (small L)

I'm going to assume that by "post the output of" you mean to reply with what I get when I put into terminal "sudo fdisk -l"
Because I don't know what it relevant data here, I apologize in advance for the data-overflow that is about to happen.

Yeah, I was after that. But you have loads of Linux partition as you can see yourself. Would you know which one is the installation you want to get going?

Otherwise, run the boot info script from the link in my signature, and post the results as explained there. You can do all that from live mode too. Just be careful to execute the script from the same folder where it is, otherwise it will give you file not found error.

I don't know which is the partition in which all my cool stuff resides. I can easily find all that through the GUI File Browser, and I am not seeing anything in it that is telling me which partition it's in. Is there any way for me to figure it out?

I think it's best to run the boot info script as suggested in the last post. It will show all the details.

Fair enough; now to shrug off the trepidation that I will do something wrong and thus lose all my files on this HD.

Alright, I've gotten the bootinfoscript to run for me; and I have the results. Though I don't want to pot the whole thing here as it is quite a lot of info there. Suggestions?

Are you worried about personal info, or just the size of the text?

If you post it inside code tags, it will have a smaller scrollable window. You can also select all text and hit the # button in the toolbar when writing the post.

Size of text. Did not know about the code part; this being the second time that I've used this forum.

Ok, on /dev/sda, the 1TB disk, you seem to have:
12.04 LTS on sda1
10.04.2 LTS on sda6

On /dev/sdc, the 20GB disk, you seem to have:
10.04.2 LTS on sdc1
12.04 LTS on sdc6

Which one of these you want to use as a main OS?

Even before you answer, here is what I would do:
Boot into live mode and in terminal:

sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda
sudo umount /mnt
sudo mount /dev/sdc6 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sdcThat will install grub2 on the MBR of the 1TB disk which is connected to your 12.04 install on the same disk, and grub2 on the MBR of the 20GB disk which is connected to the 12.04 install on that disk.

With the setting in BIOS which hdd to be the first option to boot, you control which grub2 shows up. In any case, any grub2 will be able to boot all your OSs. It depends if you want all of them to be in the boot menu because with four OSs present, the boot menu will be rather large.

Due to hardware limitations; I have to go with the 1TB drive (the 20GB is a relic of days gone by) as for which I want to be my main OS ... I'm going with 12.04 on that disk.

And I have already put in the code up there, no errors reported.

OK, so if you reboot and have the 1TB disk as first option to boot, from what happens? And make sure it's the correct 1TB disk because you have two of them and the other has a broken grub1 on it. :)
