I recently tried to install Cinnamon on Precise Pangolin but it does not work. To be precise, a new 'Cinnamon' icon appears at log-in time, but when I click that and log in I do not obtain the Cinnamon desktop. I get something that looks just like the Classic Gnome desktop.

I tried opening a terminal and typing 'cinnamon --replace' and this did produce the Cinnamon desktop, but it worked very slowly and the terminal recorded a long string of error messages (which I can reproduce if necessary--but I would like to be able to get Cinnamon from log-in).

Any ideas, anyone? I obtained Cinnamon by the following commands

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cinnamon

as advised in post #32 of the following thread:

The Syntaptic Package Manager says it is installed.
