Just upgraded to 12.04, yearned for GNOME and set it up. But the Appearance menu item in system, which is very useful for switching to the pleasant Equinox light theme, is missing. How do I get it back?

Thanks

I think it was this that I installed.

sudo apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool

Then under Applications, system tools, preferences, advanced.

But there seem to be limited choices in themes and some are causing issues like white text on white background.

Yes, I did that, too, and posted when I got poor results. I'm looking for gnome-appearance-properties, which I find has been removed from Gnome 3. Advanced Settings can't read my shell extensions and, as you observe, offers a very limited selection of themes.

If Gnome is being supported till 2017, as I hear, it should be made easy to customise, as it used to be.

After your post, I remembered there were some other threads. I found this and added some of these changes to my system.
