[12.04] LightDM quits/crashes

LightDM does not start up properly on a fresh PP install. I see the Ubuntu logo at the end of the bootup (using nvidia drivers, so plymouth is useless) and then it goes back to console.

Looking at the logs, LightDM shuts down because its greeter shuts down. The greeter shuts down with a message that is not quite helpful.

Before I get the suggestion again: this is a new/fresh install of Precise Pangolin. Reinstalling will not help (nor is it an option since this is a computer which is going into production and has cost a full day to set up).

Edit: I forgot to mention that I *can* start LightDM by hand as root. This is currently my workaround: use rc.local and a 10 second delay to start LightDM after the Upstart-LightDM has stopped.

@cyberwizzard-Your thread seems to be the closest I can find to mirror my problem. I posted this on 'Ask Ubuntu' without receiving any helpful response.


I did a clean install '12.04_amd64 3 times with the same results each time. Installation went without problems, I did all my updates, installed aptitude, synaptic, changed server locale, started adding multimedia apps when everything went blank and logged out. No error messages. Login screen only allows guest access. I reinstalled 11.10_amd64-no problems now. Second and third install gave same results. The only root access is by tty. This is the most unusable version I've had in the 6 years I've been using Ubuntu.

Well excuse me! I never stated that I was finished with 12.04; I simply returned to Oneiric as a temporary measure until this problem is solved. I posted here hoping to get assistance or at least some suggestion as to a solution, not to be chastised like a schoolboy. I was led to believe 'Ask Ubuntu' was the place to be for solutions-obviously I was mis-informed. – dangmc 25 mins ago

I had Precise as a guest OS on Virtualbox since alpha 2 and have been quite impressed by lack of major issues. Thank You

This question addresses recovering from, in essence, a bug, and it's basically impossible to debug problems that are not reproducible and that the original reporter has given up and downgraded away from. @jrg Thank you for your suggestion. I'm going to reinstall 12.04 on my old xp drive since I really don't need xp anymore; I will then try your suggested fix/workaround. My gut feeling is that we have a bug in Lightdm; not a problem with permissions because admin account was available through multiple reboots-then without warning 'auto' logged out to guest screen. Admin was no longer accessable neither cli or gui.@Jacob-thank you for positive comment. I would have filed bug rep-couldn't do it through console. – dangmc 4 mins ago edit

Update: reinstalled 12.04, upon initial reboot defaulted immediately to guest acccount, booted to console, performed updates, rebooted, installed: gnome-session-fallback, gnome-shell, gnome-tweak-tool. Rebooted, changed lightdm settings per: http://www.ubuntubuzz.com/2012/03/how-to-disable-guest-account-in-ubuntu.html
now seems to be ok so far. I won't mark this solved until I'm sure it won't jump to login screen while I'm working.

Same hapens to me. Since I can't to install and uninstall everyday, I solved it temporarily by uninstalling Ati Catalyst Drivers. Now the graphcs card's cooler is running all the time making a lot of noise.

I've solved the problem in my laptop. After uninstalling the Ati Drivers /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh, I reinstalled them again and now it seems everyting is working fine again.

Great that you were able to fix your problem. My graphics card is 'Nvidia' and I tried your suggestion without success.
I just reinstalled Nvidia driver: 302.07, installed GDM, purged & reinstalled xserver all from console. Rebooted to Ubuntu 3D, played flash video, crashed to login screen in 23 secs. Rebooted to 2D, working great. Plays videos flawlessly.

I'm still experiencing the same problem: watching videos in 3d mode results in desktop reverting to login screen in 2-5 minutes. When I switch to 2d mode either in unity or gnome-everything works without problems.

fixes this problem. I've been pulling my hair out the last
2 days and running the above command fixed it for me.

I'm running 12.10 (Quantal).
