hi is there any way of checking a download of ubuntu for errors before burning it to a cd

You can compute the checksum of your local file (md5sum filename) and compare it to the one published on the download site (ubuntu-12.04-desktop-i386.iso would be d791352694374f1c478779f7f4447a3f, for example).

Your CD burner may also have a 'Verify' feature, as well.
