I am using Gnome Shell with Ubuntu 12.04. However the wallpaper does not show up even I have already set it from System Settings -> Appearance.

Any suggestions? Thanks a lot.

Are you able to open "Appearance" by right-clicking the Desktop and selecting "Change Desktop Background"? If so, does this work?

Richard, thanks for your reply. Right click on the desktop does not bring up any menu.

Fortunately I think I have figured out a way to fix this as follows:

Open gnome-tweak-tool
click on the Desktop tab
Turn on "Have manager handle the desktop"
Turn on "Computer icon visible on desktop"

Turn on "Have manager handle the desktop"

That sounds like a good idea! Although I'm not sure why it would be turned off in the first place.

Please click on Thread Tools at the top and mark as "SOLVED".

Thanks for the hint, but to me this sounds more like a hack, not a solution!

When switching it on and off again, the background stays visible until next logout.

I do further not want to have the manager handle the desktop!
I means that apps can place starters on my desktop, I do not want that, that's why I chose Gnome Shell.

And before upgrading to Ubuntu 13.04 it worked for me, actually.

Is there any other approach?
