I see from a post ..

.. boot into recovery mode and login without X running in terminal mode. Once I login, I type "startx" and the Gnome GUI in go.

How do I do that please ?

Thanks, but I don't see the grub messages. Running 10.04

Oops, I just saw ..

Users of Ubuntu Karmic (9.10) and higher will need to press and hold the left Shift key instead of Escape in step 4, and may not see the "Grub loading, please wait..." message in step 3.
