Thread moved to The Community Cafe.

Like Ubuntu, Debian is an operating system, and Ubuntu is based upon it.

More information can be found at http://www.debian.org/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debian

A nice BSD OS.

Debian is not BSD OS. It's a Linux based OS on top of which Ubuntu is built.

it's very good for servers as it is very very stable.

Debian is mouth full of awesome!!

Debian is one of the original linux distributors. They believe in stability over features and compatibility across many platforms. For that they now do have a BSD kernel option for those more into UNIX but they still run Linux as their main kernel of choice.

A nice BSD OS.

If I wanted the BSD experience, I doubt if I would go with Debian.

Debian is an Operating system announced by Ian Murdock, who initially called the system "the Debian Linux Release". The word "Debian" was derived as a combination of the first name of his then-girlfriend Debra Lynn and his own first name.

The Debian Project is an association of individuals who have made common cause to create a free operating system. This operating system that we have created is called Debian.

Debian can be made to be even lighter than the lightest Ubuntu GUI. Because there's one thing that Debian does that Ubuntu doesn't, and that's not forcing gnome on certain packages.

Exa: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=50703 (xmessage shutdown / logoff won't work because your user has to be given shutdown / logout rights instead (via a special file) so you don't have to give it root/admin rights. Since xmessage won't work with sudo.)
