Hardware compatibility list. If we actually do have one, it's pretty awful. Or am I just missing something?

Yea.. I dont even bother anymore.. Most stuff works unless you get into specialty card like some raid ones. Printers in regards to full functionality are best checked by the manufacturer page.
ATI is good, NVidia is better in regards to video cards. Some wireless may have issues, just check on that per chipset. Google can be your best bud.
It may be my luck but I have better compatibility across the board with Linux then I do with Windows..

I thing hardware compatibility list is the listing of third party hardware devices, Each hardware device has his own description and and specification as well.

I tried to find one when a thunderstorm knocked out my ethernet. I wanted to buy a compatible card but the list was way outdated. Turned out the one I got was compatible anyway. I'm guessing most hardware is except the very newest items.

It depends on the type of hardware. Ethernet nearly always works with Linux. Most compatability problems seem to be with wireless and video cards. So it's most important to check those in advance when you buy a new machine.
