Hi,
If I use wine and install IE, at work, is this allowed / legal, as its not on windows, but essentially is a free download.

Anyone any practical experience with the legal side of this?

I think they won't let you make a download unless you run that "Genuine Windows Product" thing which will fail if you have Linux. Don't know about the legality but their was this .deb I once downloaded just by curiosity and you could choose which IE version you want to use and it worked OK. Just from curiosity, why would you like to use Internet Explorer on Linux?

Because an asp.net program we have must have some of the proprietary layout bit in it.
Firefox on windows/linux or any other non ie. based browser will not display properly.

It seems to be "Grid Layout" in Visual Studio that causes it.

this is the only real tie to windows we have, apart from the one server it runs on, but the app is so important to our business.

As long as you have a Windows license, then it is fine.
