Customizing a USB Install

I've set up ubuntu on a USB, and I've given it 4GB of persistent data to work with, I want to use this usb as a install guide for PCs so that I wont have to update my software every time I install the OS, if I apt get my software onto the usb running it as a live trial, then install the OS from that USB, will the apps be installed into the PCs?

Or is there something else I have to do to get this going?
