Hey all.

It's all in the title really, but I'll try to explain also. I attempted to install Ubuntu my new pc earlier via disk, that stopped working half way through and I couldn't get it to work again. So now I'm trying pendrive install and that not even starting, I select boot from usb-hdd in bios and it not even loading, just hanging on a black screen with a little flashing '-' symbol in the corner. Please help

Thanks Tim

Can you post the specifications of your make and model computer. Anything would be helpful. Thanks.

There are some things that you should do before you install any Linux system.
1. After completing the download, check the md5sum.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

2. Burn the ISO (do not copy) at the lowest possible speed to insure the best possible chance of a successful burn.

3. Take the OS "for a spin". Try it on your machine just to see how it works or doesn't work on your hardware.

And if possible try to use a USB Flash Drive to install Ubuntu, just in case your optical drive is faulty or dirty.

Here is a nice guide:

That's what i'm trying to do now, but it's not working, hence the thread asking for help.

I've done all of that apart from trying Ubuntu out first. My first attempt at using cd to install didnt work, so i burnt it onto another disk at a slower speed and that didnt even start up.

Not sure if you need it but here is a site that explains how to install from a flash drive.

If the Ubuntu install isn't working perhaps you should try a lighter OS like Xubuntu, Lubuntu, or Bodhi Linux.
