i have windows xp what ubuntu operating system can i use to replace it with? how do i replace it?

You can use any of the different flavors of Ubuntu to replace XP. A traditional install from a livecd would probably be the easiest way to install Ubuntu.

depends on your hardware specifications. but most should work. you can try it first with liveCD/UB and see if you like it and then install it:

note that Ubuntu can't run windows programmes. some can be run using WINE but most can't.
