How do I go about running my desk top over two displays, I have two graphic cards installed in my PC. They both work perfectly fine when I'm running windows but I have no idea how to get it to work in ubuntu. Any pointers would be much appreciated.

What are your video cards? Nvidia has the Nvidia-Settings utility that can easily set dial monitor, I have done this on my desktop and an old Nvidia laptop.

In general, you should be able to go to the display settings and detect both monitors. I have done with on my Intel laptop.

Which Ubuntu? What are your video cards?

ATI provides the Catalyst Control Center. Eyefinity is also now supported in Linux for multiple monitors.

Both NVIDIA and ATI have older cards that are in the "legacy" pile and may not perform with newer proprietary drivers.
