About 10 years ago when I was a contractor with Glaxo Smith Kline, a guy came in and showed me a new diagramming specification that was sort of like UML but where he could ask me a series of questions and basically draw a diagram for any large application system from a logical data workflow perspective and a chronological perspective. From this diagram, you can then determine hosting requirements in a unified manner as well as know where to put security controls, firewalls, and systems monitoring scripts to ensure everything is secure and runs smoothly.
For the life of me, I can't remember this specification, but I do know it's not UML, CORBA, UDDI, and doesn't involve web services specifications in this case. If you happen to know what I'm talking about, please let me know.
