will this actually do any good? people have been trying to get vendors to support linux for a long time, I am just curious as to what makes this effort any different?

If you want better driver support, then get your hands on a metric assload of money. Money talks, ******** walks.

Volume matters, more petitions == larger voice. The corperations realise that not everyone will sign the same petition and that the number of petitions with reasonable sized signatories is proportional to the number of users. So on its own it means little but its added the smaller efforts together than makes a difference.

Your voice doesn't mean a damn thing. The hardware vendors only care about turning a profit. Try to think like a businessman who has to answer to stockholders: if you're not going to turn a profit developing drivers for a minority market, why would you do it?

Linux users also buy hardware, and in most cases have to settle for cheaper hardware because the latest and greatest doesn't run well on Linux. The vendors don't know what the demand is petitions like this one show them that there is a demand and also show how much demand there is. So they are not as useless as you might think but depending on numbers they might not make all that much difference of course.

If people would take it seriously, it might be a success.. However, just look at the first 4 signatures...

WTF is Bill Gates doing there?

And many names are meaningless...

Why did nVidia, Intel, Creative, Adaptec ,Via do it then? are they bad businessmen? or do you think that they want to sell their hardware to Linux users as well ?
Also, look at IBM (http://www-1.ibm.com/linux/va_4067.shtml)

As soon as somebody signed it as "bill gates" it lost all its credability tbh....

In a world of 6.5 billion people maybe there might just be someone ELSE called Bill Gates ?
I've got a mate called Paul Newman by the way :)
And I know a guy called Charlie Brown.

Let's hope they don't sign the petition :p

I would sign it if it demanded open source drivers only. I have no use for binary-only drivers. They are quickly outdated and not able to benefit from being open-source (not crashing your kernel, getting better over time, not to mention not taint the kernel)

Anyway, I return stuff that doesn't work with linux. That's how I vote. I let the vendor know why I am returning it, just like I let them know what I am shopping for.

I think opening your mouth and mentioning linux to a salesperson is the best thing you can do. Then, only shop at stores where you get a favorable response.

Don't do legwork to try to find out of something works or not in Ubuntu. Ask the store staff - it's their job! If they screw up, return the thing and tell them why.

too bad "bill gates" wasn't the 666th poster, then it would have been funny. ;)
