We have our problems with Linux although it's secure,
Windows is easy peasy but not secure.
Imagine one day in the near future that Linux becomes GUI, click and install, all drivers available open source, plug and play, no need for the terminal.....
Would it be as much fun ?
Do we sometimes "enjoy" the problems, the instability, the command line ?
If linux was perfect, would you still use it? or would you look for an alternative new style OS, unstable ?
And scream "Bring on the breakage !!!"
I think personally for me, a perfect linux distro wouldn't have the same appeal/ challenge.

Yeah I'm kinda worried about linux getting to popular...
Everyone I've shown Ubuntu to has asked me "Can I have that?" or "Is it possible for me to use that?"
EDIT: These are mostly girls that don't know jack about computers.
EDIT: We'll probably all have to move to microkernels or something.

There are far too many distros running at different difficulty levels for that to happen.
Getting bored of the 'just point and click interface'?
Try Arch.
Find that too easy?
Try Slackware
Want an even bigger challenge?
Try Linux From Scratch.

Ok, I've never done it before, so I just added a poll.
Have fun :)
I voted just for the drivers, by the way.

Sooooo.... let me get this straight....
1. Linux isn't popular enough so that hardware manufacturers / gaming companies do not make hot native products for it...
2. Guys complain left and right that there aren't enough girls interested in computers/Linux
And Ubuntu is now popular/slick enough to have *girls* that "don't know jack about computers" asking if they can use it... :-k
And this is a BAD THING?!:shock::shock::shock::shock:
This girl is going to walk back to her laptop, shaking her head. LOL.

We were never a myth, we just delayed a while, taking a long hard look at all the pro's and con's before attempting world domination... :-)

There are distros that already do what you're talking about.
Ubuntu is a subset of "Linux." It is not Linux.

There will always be distros that you can have fun with the challenge I'd say.
There will be distros like Ubuntu, SUSE, and MEPIS for example that will start tackling the mainstream users. Then we'll always have our Slackware, Arch, Gentoo, etc. for those of us who want the challenge.
I don't the "challenging" distros are going anywhere soon. Look at how long Slack as stuck around.
And there's always BSD. :P

As long as the basic system with the drivers works out of the box, I'm happy to use the terminal for other things. I'm very happy I don't have to search for freeware online like I used to do when using Windows... well, I still do sometimes, but not as frequently, because there's just no need for it, and I think that's very nice. =)

Ubuntu isn't Linux !?!? :o Oh my god !! Everybody I know calls it Ubuntu Linux ?
What is it then? What's a subset ?
Do we have to call it "Ubuntu Subset Not Linux" now then ? :)

Ubuntu isn't the be all and end all of Linux, that is all aysiu was saying. Anyway you could argue that Linux is only a kernel.

Linux is not even an operating system, it's a kernel. Ubuntu uses this kernel. It also uses other programs, like the X server and a whole bunch of GNU utilities.
And no, I am not in the least bit worried. Ubuntu, and all Free and Open Source programs, always allow you to tinker as much as you like. It's impossible for them to restrict you, because you have the source. So, even if it will be easy to set up, it will still be possible to study it in as much depth as you like, and the depths are nearly infinite.

It was a lame attempt at a joke, because this is a light hearted thread about Linux in general, I didn't see anyone mention Ubuntu in specific.
I know that Linux is a Kernel, I call distro's "whatever" Linux, and I didn't realise that every thread had to be technically perfect.
If I wanted to be pedantic, I could spend all day looking for threads to correct.
But I really can't be bothered.
