For example can you download themes. I am a relative newbie to unity so if you could keep it simple it would be greatly appreciated.

All possible options are in the Unity 3D plug-in.

Yes download Confity, Compiz, a Dock like Cairo Dock, or several docks to add some widgets and applets. And you can change a lot of your system behaviour and look.

Check out http://gnome-look.org (http://gnome-look.org/) There is an extensive collection of themes, icons and other misc. stuff to customize your desktop. Look for GTK 3.x in the categories.

You can customise Unity with the applications mentioned before. As you can also install different desktop environments from the Software Center or from a Terminal. If you want to try press ctrl-alt-t simultaneously and type: sudo apt-get install e17. This will install the Enlightenment 17 Desktop Environment, it a very lightweight environment but it looks pretty nice. It is also very customisable. You can access it in your login screen, in the box where you type your username and password you'd be able to see which Desktop Environment you can choose. You'll be able to choose depending on what you have installed. From there you'd be able to choose Enlightenment. You'll just have to configure it the way you want it, just play around with it. There are tons of themes already setup, or you can make your own. As you can also make it work the way you want to. Google e17 and you'll see screenshots of what I'm talking about. There are other Desktop Environment likes XFCE, GNOME, KDE, etc., etc., etc., and you can customise and add lots of features to them.

And you can install MyUnity to give you more options for tweaking it to your liking. To read about it and get easy install directions go to http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/12/unity-tweak-tool-myunity-gets-new-look-coming-to-ubuntu-software-centre/
