Just wanted to share a program I'm working on. It is a panel indicator that can help keep your desktop clear by creating a folder named with the day's date and moving everything on your desktop into it. I hope that someone finds it useful! Check it out and download it at http://zburnham.co.cc/dayfolder/.

I'm only just working on it, and it hasn't messed up any of my files or sent them where I haven't wanted them, but if that happens to you, don't blame me!

Cool idea, but I don't use my desktop to store files. Everything goes into my /home folder. Maybe a cool option for the user would be to choose which file location to work from?

Think this is an excellent idea and will try it later when I get back on my home machine.

Good idea.

Similar program for firefox bookmarks would be cool too. Eg. make a new bookmarks folder and move every bookmark to it.
(Yes. I am flooded with bookmarks. Even now I have 2.5 pages of them...)

Hi - I've been working on this in the past month and you can now choose a directory instead of having it always look at the Desktop. Check http://zburnham.co.cc/dayfolder/ again and there is also a ppa you can add, or you can download the .deb files from the launchpad page linked to there.

It does that and some more features! More is in the works.

A word of caution - I don't recommend using this on your /home/my_name/ directory. I just don't know where things would go. Just saying. I'm working on it. Enjoy :)

There is a similar program in existence for those of you who use KDE. It is called "Magic folder" and is according to its description a "widget that sorts files dropped onto it into the users personal file system, following custom made rules."
