The "feature" that keeps me from using Unity and delays my upgrades is my requirement to have an application's menu within the application window, and not in the upper left of the display.

If I upgrade to 12.04 will I have the option to get what I need?

What GUI and version would I use?

Thank you!

The Gnome Shell and Gnome Classic have the application menu in the application window . Unity will not give you that option by default except in Firefox and the requires disabling global menu integration. I remember reading about disabling App Menu in Unity. If you are planning to disable the Unity features you might as well use Gnome.

This is called global menus, here is the code to remove it:

sudo apt-get remove indicator-appmenu
