View Full Version : Thesaurus in Terminal

Greetings,

Is anyone aware of a (preferably) minimal thesaurus/dictionary tool for terminal? When writing, I prefer to consult a thesaurus when I feel like I am re-using words too often. I prefer to have my paper thesaurus because the paper smells so good, but sometimes I don't have it with me. I prefer not to open a browser or office app when I will certainly already have at least one terminal open.

The command can be long, and I'll alias it to something dead simple so that I could type:
th prefer

The prefer thing is an intentional joke, but the post is not! :)

Thanks!!

Well, for now I found http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=371482

It worked after modifying the lynx address argument from wordnet.princeton.... to wordnetweb.princeton...

It is pretty nice that it gives definitions and synonyms for all word types, but I was hoping to have something offline for both speed and to be able to use it, for example, when traveling.

I'd still appreciate any additional comments and suggestions from the community. If I could find an offline version, I'll mark it solved.

Thanks,
Edwin
