I am starting to wonder whether it is possible at all to install Kubuntu 11.10, amd 64 bits, on a Dell Vostro 1520 laptop. (64 bits laptop).

Someone reported problems on a Dell Vostro 1500: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10172858#post10172858

The

sudo do-release-upgrade

failed. I posted other threads about this, asking for fixes, and I was advised to create a live CD of Kubuntu 11.10, boot from it, then do chroot.

Well, AFAIK the CD is fine. The md5sum is what it should be, K3b reported success when burning the image, and my Dell Vostro reported 0 errors when I chose the option to check the CD after booting on it. But when I choose the option "Start Kubuntu" it does not start.

Should I try to reinstall Kubuntu 10.4? Should I choose another Ubuntu version? Should I try the 32 bits version?

EDIT: Well Kubuntu 11.10 32 bits does not work either. This time I am certain the CD is fine because it is the CD I used to install Kubuntu 11.10 on my 32 bits machine. I'm trying Gnome next.

Neither does Kubuntu 10.10 or Ubuntu 11.10. They boot, they eventually ask me to choose between "Try" or "Install", and then nothing. The computer just hangs.

Should I scrap this computer?
