Not very long a go I found an app for my Galaxy cellphone that enables it to take HDR photos by taking two consecutive photos and superposing them; something that my Canon powershot can not do. Then I realized how good an "open source camera" can be. In fact digital camera companies, similar to Microsoft, take good advantage of making their cameras' internal software unmodifiable.
Searching the internet I found Stanford's
OpenCamera (http://graphics.stanford.edu/projects/camera-2.0/). It's still in infancy but looks promising.
